Oaths

As fickle as Fae society can be, there is sometimes a need for a strong commitment. Oaths are sworn between Fae as a way of assuring confidence between the two over the subject of the Oath. Oaths are enforced by Glamour itself and Oathbreakers are severely punished, repeat offenders are often chimerically marked as such and shunned from Fae society. Oaths are not to be taken lightly, but when done well can add a dramatic flavour to the game and serve an important role in Fae society.

The Oaths listed herein are Oaths that are commonly found and by no means an exhaustive list, Fae can swear custom Oaths that are backed by Glamour with ST oversight.

The Oath of Clasped Hands is an Oath of True Friendship and is not undertaken lightly, it is generally the foundation for oathcirles and motleys as the bond is very strong. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 185).

Swearing an Oath of Fealty is exactly what you would assume. This happens at many Knightings and Sainings and the Kithain undertaking the Oath are swearing loyalty to a superior. The fashion in which this Oath is broken can yield particularly nasty consequences. The Oath of the Escheat is the common response to this oath. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 186).

The Oath of Escheat is an Oath sworn by a Noble to take on a vassal. This Oath is commonly sworn in conjunction with the Oath of Fealty but that is not always the case. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 186).

The Oath of Accepted Burden is an Oath made to another to assure the completion of a task. The task can be of any difficulty, as simple as a kiss or as difficult as retrieving the still beating heart of an enemy. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 186).

The Oath of Adoption is sworn between two Kithain who want to establish themselves as parent and child. Henceforth after the swearing of the Oath they are viewed as if they were truely family and are to be treated as such. Those who break this Oath are among the most reviled of Kithain and are forever shunned from Fae society. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 186).

The Kithain undertaking the Oath of Guardianship swears to protect an object, person or place from any and all harm to the point of ultimate-sacrifice. Those who break this Oath are cursed to never spend two nights in the same bed until a century has passed. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 187).

The Oath of Truehearts is sworn between two lovers who wish to bind their love in glamour. When the Oath is made each forge a chimerical songbird that hovers around them - visible only to each other - and sings. If this Oath is ever broken, the songbird becomes visible to all and ceases to sing, a sign to all of the Kithain's betrayal.(More information on The Shining Host MET Page 187).

The Oath of the Long Road is the most potent of Fae Oaths known to most Changelings. A Kithain swears to complete a quest in front of at least one but preferably three witnesses, and the swearing is usually sanctified by a sacrifice of some sort by the Kithain undertaking the Oath. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 188).

The Oath of Crossed Blades is generally only taken by Trolls and Sidhe where they swear eternal hatred towards someone and is a good way to lay opinions on the table in tense political situations. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 188).

The Oath of Undoing is like the Oath of Crossed blades except that it demands the final death of the person it is sworn against instead of a hated rivalry. This Oath is forbidden among Kithain and is a very easy way for Banality to tempt a Kithain into becomming a Dauntain. (More information on The Shining Host MET Page 188).

The Oath of Silence is sworn by Kithain who wish to signify that, no matter what happens, they will never break confidence and reveal a certain secret. By swearing this Oath, Kithain bind themselves such that it becomes nearly impossible to voluntarily break this confidence. (More information on The Shining Host MET Player's Guide page 201.)

The Oath of Truth is mostly what it sounds like; used much as a swearing-in would be in court, it signifies that the Changeling is about to tell the absolute truth as they know it. (More information on The Shining Host MET Player's Guide page 201-202.)
